Kumbululuka Kwa Bafana:
Giving Flight to Hope
On a brisk morning on the 10th of June, around 500 children gathered at the Zambian Air Force Base at Kenneth Kaunda Airport (KKIA) to participate in the remarkable flying initiative known as Kumbululuka Kwa Bafana, which directly translates to “the flight of children”. Founded by renowned pilot Felix Gosher, the initiative aims to bring joy through the transformative experience of flight to underprivileged children in Southern Africa.
Proflight and its partners are honoured to be part of the Kumbululuka Kwa Bafana event once again. By giving these young hearts the gift of flight, the initiative hopes to instil hope, motivation, and a belief in their own potential to soar.
Now in its second year, Proflight Zambia and its partners worked tirelessly to make the year’s highly anticipated event a roaring success. This year’s event featured exhilarating flights around Lusaka aboard Proflight’s Boeing 737-500 aircraft, including an array of fun-filled activities and entertainment for both children and adults, as well as a captivating aero acrobatics display. The 2023 Kumbululuka Kwa Bafana event has expanded to include the public; families, aviation enthusiasts, and supporters all attended to watch the magic unfold.
Last year, Proflight proudly participated in the event by providing an extraordinary experience for the children by sponsoring two circuits aboard a 50-seat CRJ aircraft. This year, the airline has elevated its support by availing the spacious Boeing 737-500 on a circuit, granting 105 children the opportunity to soar through the skies, fuelling their imagination and inspiring limitless possibilities. Furthermore, it sponsored several return flights and the carriage of the required cargo from Johannesburg.
Proflight expressed its heartfelt gratitude to its partners who ensured the events and activities ran smoothly in their various capacities; Total Energy Zambia pledged to fuel the 737-500 aircraft for the circuit that used an estimated 1000 litres for the flight, while the Zambia Airports Corporation agreed to waiver all fees associated with civilian aircraft pledged to fly the children around the airport.
Other partners included the Zambia Air Force, ARC Insurance, and Africa Charter Airlines.
The commitment of Proflight and its partners in the aviation industry has made Kumbululuka Kwa Bafana possible and has impacted the lives of countless children from underprivileged backgrounds.
